Spread Your Light
Jennifer Doucet
There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects
it - Edith Wharton
As this month’s spotlight, WOMEN is delighted to reveal the true identity of the member masquerading as Mrs. Claus throughout the Miramichi during the month of December.
The candle giving light and the mirror reflecting light aptly describes Jennifer Doucet. Anyone who knows Jen, will verify that she is forever doing her part to make the Miramichi better.
Jennifer was born and raised in Miramichi. Upon graduation she moved to Moncton to attend University, unbeknownst to her she would live there for the next 16 years. While raising a young family Jennifer had become a part of the City of Moncton. In 1998, the death of her father brought Jennifer, her husband Jeff and their children back to the place she had always called home.
Jennifer Doucet seems to have an endless supply of energy. She is consistently contributing her time and efforts to many community organizations and has been involved with numerous activities over the years. Upon returning to the Miramichi, Jennifer became actively involved with the Newcastle Figure Skating Club both assisting with organizational duties and as a figure skating instructor until 2003.
In 2003 she began working with Mommies & Tummies as a Peer Support worker. She was promoted to Coordinator in 2005 and worked in that capacity until December 2010. Mummies & Tummies was a support group for ladies who were pregnant or had children up to the age of 2. It was a way to promote Breastfeeding, Healthy Eating and Active living…three natural tools for Diabetes prevention. This past October Jennifer began a similar program at the Eel Ground Health Center.
Entrepreneurship called Jennifer’s name and led her to start a business as the Owner of Luv to Scrap, a scrapbooking store; that she operated for three years. In October 2010, she began working as a Bridal/Prom Consultant with Dress-Rite.
Currently, Jennifer provides her talents as the President of the Miramichi Skating Club and continues to lace up her skates when needed. She chairs the PSSC Committee at Croft Elementary School, contributed eight years as District Education Councilor for School District 16, participated as a member of the PSSC Committees for Harkins Middle School and Miramichi Valley High School, and as a member of the District Health Advisory Committee for School District 16.
Jennifer has a gift for following a calling that has led her to shine light where it is needed and once there reflect that light onto those she touches with her kindness and compassion. She believes in treating all people with dignity and respect; that all of us are created equal and everyone responds to kindness and compassion.
Jennifer is proud to be a Miramichier who lived away for 16 years and had the opportunity to come back home and raise her four children. She says “the Miramichi has a lot to offer! We need to foster a feeling of positive thinking among the residents. We have been referred to as belonging to a “have not” province for so many years that it has seeped into our psyches. We have much to build upon and have many forward thinking people but we all need to climb on the band wagon and make things happen!”
Jennifer will be undertaking an exciting adventure in the New Year to completer her University Degree that she began almost 30 years ago! It is her “belief that we never stop learning and growing and this is just another step on my journey”.
Thank you Jennifer Doucet for spreading your Light for the Miramichi!

A Positive Force Toward a New and Vibrant Miramichi
WOMEN Board of Directors
This month WOMEN will hold their Annual General Meeting. Each year this event is an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, the Board of Directors and, look forward with plans and anticipation for the year ahead. For this reason, WOMEN would like to share their reflections of the past and plans for the future with our members in a special spotlight that celebrates the success our network.
The past year has been full of activity for WOMEN. The year began last February with our Annual General Meeting (AGM). Each year the AGM is held at a member location, Satt-va Studio and owner Ronda Carter hosted last year’s event. Also in February, WOMEN participated in the “All Things Ladies” event in Support of Autism Awareness. This event helped to re-launch and promote the network. In March, International Women’s Day was celebrated with Guest Speaker, Claudina Whisken of Thomas International. Claudina provided insights into “Aligning Behaviour with Business Success”. A “Bring on Summer” event was held in June at the member location of Helen’s Pool and Garden Supply Center, owned and operated by WOMEN President Helen Ward-Wakelin. In October WOMEN celebrated the Female Entrepreneur of the Year during the Chamber Gala. Several very worthy nominations were received with the three finalists being Janet Lynch of Lynch’s Accounting Service, Anne Marie Hogarth of Hogies Coffee House and Eatery and Sherry Sturgeon of Genesis Salon and Spa, who was named Female Entrepreneur of the Year. An “Eats and Treats” event was also held in October at the member location of King George Bed and Breakfast owned and operated by Sara MacInnis. The month of December brought about a peppermint twist of an event by having people guess which one of our WOMEN members was masquerading around the Miramichi as Mrs. Claus. This event was accomplished in partnership with Miramichi Online who provided video footage and an interview with Mrs. Claus “herself”. This ran as a contest on the WOMEN website for the month of December with the winner receiving a one year free membership to WOMEN. Many thanks are extended to Jennifer Doucet for being Mrs. Claus and to the many individuals who participated in the contest by submitting a guess. Several individuals correctly names Jennifer as Mrs. Claus with the winner being randomly drawn from the correct entries. Congratulations to Janice Bond who was the winner.
Also this year WOMEN completely redesigned and relaunched their website with several new features including the Spotlight on Success and WOW (Woman of the Week). These features are two ways that the many contributions and achievements of our WOMEN members are promoted. The Spotlight on Success feature began in October and appears on the first of each month for the whole month. The following members have been spotlighted to date: Sherry Sturgeon, Genesis Salon and Spa, Cathy Sherrard, Cathy’s Alterations and Embroidery, Sara MacInnis, King George Bed and Breakfast and this month Women spotlights Jennifer Doucet of Dress Rite. The WOW (Woman of the week) also began in October and provides a brief focus on one member each week. To date, the following members have been recognized as WOW: Ivy Lam, Miramichi Chamber of Commerce; Tosha Hamilton, Beaubear Credit Union; Natalie Forrest, Marlin Travel; Kim Harris, Eyemagine Photography; Kelly Sherrard, Enterprise Miramichi, Donna Dinan, Pet Feeds Plus, Lori Smith, Smith’s CustomCAD; Angie Vickers, Bompu Studio; and Mrs. Claus, Santa’s Workshop. The website has realized tremendous success and has had 11000 visits since being launched just over a year ago on January 25, 2011
We are excited to begin a new year and several upcoming initiatives that will better improve the effectiveness of the network. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for February 2, 2012 at Genesis Salon and Spa to showcase the business of female entrepreneur Sherry Sturgeon. This event will enable WOMEN to review the past years events and kick off a new year.
On February 29, WOMEN will host Paula Morand at the Howard Johnson for an exciting evening that will help members develop an engaging elevator pitch, learn how to leave the right lasting impression, create momentum and excitement, and spur connections and potential sales.
International Women’s Day takes place each year on March 8. This event recognizes and celebrates the Economic, Political and Social Achievements of Women. The International theme this year is “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures”. We are excited about this theme and are in progress of coordinating an International Women’s Day event with details to follow as they materialize.
Congratulations to our Network for a very successful year. WOMEN extends many thanks to our members for their numerous contributions and participation at network events… without you there would be no us. We look forward to the upcoming year and opportunities to supporting each other while building our network and our community.

This personal determination and drive provides the stamina for her many commitments and accomplishments. Above all, Paula is a devoted wife and loving mother of three.
The following story exemplifies Paula Matchett’s desire and belief that “one person can make a difference”.
While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.
He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”
This year, for the very first time, an initiative of MYPIE provided citizens of the Miramichi region with the opportunity to vote for an outstanding individual who exemplifies hard work and dedication through volunteerism and a genuine care for the community’s well-being. The award known as Miramchi’s - The Very Best called for nominations earlier this year and a selection committee determined the top ten nominees. The winner will be announced at the MYPIE Gala taking place on April 21. Paula was nominated for the award and has been selected as a top ten nominee. Everyone is encouraged to attend the MYPIE Gala to support Paula and each of the nominees.
We are so pleased to have Paula’s talents and energy contributing to so many wonderful organizations. She is truly making a difference for our community and not just for one but for many. The Sky is the Limit for Paula Matchett!

April Dickson
Making a Difference
April Dickson
April Dickson is a Mortgage Consultant with The Mortgage Centre/ Estate Mortgages Inc. Since November of 2007 she has been diligently assisting her clients with mortgage purchases, refinances, renewals, new construction, self employed programs and more. Prior to being a Mortgage Consultant, April was employed with HSBC Finance as Financial Associate.
Receiving word that HSBC Finance would be closing the Miramichi branch devastated April… she enjoyed her work and had found her passion. Her spark was soon reignited when Guy Richard contacted her with a request to join him at his Local Mortgage Centre. April jumped at the opportunity to become his business partner and has loved every minute of making a difference in client’s financial futures.
April is truly a people person and feels that the most exciting and inspiring part of her career is the many wonderful people that she meets. Assisting and enabling her clients to have the most amazing, easy, stress free process when it comes to their largest investment – their home, provides April with tremendous joy and satisfaction. This feeling of accomplishment and making a difference in someone else’s life with their ability to achieve a goal or dream, motivates April and enables her to go above and beyond for her clients.
April strives to ensure everyone she works with whether it be for a purchase, refinance, renewal or whatever their need may be, feels that they have had the best experience and the most informative customer service in the industry. She thrives on being certain that her clients are looked after and know that she works for them… not the lenders. April is driven to meet her client’s needs and determines a measure of her success by client referrals to family and friends enabling her to grow her business each year. She is currently working toward a goal of increasing her client database by at least 50%. Within the next five years, she aspires to have their local franchise established as a presence in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland. She will be travelling to ensure her Maritime clients who had to move away to find employment are looked after the same way they would be if they were here locally.
Family and community involvement are other important aspects of April’s life. She is passionate about spending time with her family and is a large part of her nieces and nephews lives. They are actively involved in sports and April tries not to miss any opportunity to go cheer them on. April is also a member of WOMEN and the Miramichi Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Directors for MYPIE, and the Napan Agricultural Show. April pays attention to her well being and physical fitness through her membership and involvement with The Eel Ground and Pound Athletic Complex.
In line with her community involvement and active WOMEN membership April is the host for this months WOMEN’s networking event “A Night of Indulgence”. She invites and encourages everyone to join WOMEN on May 16th from 6-9 pm for a networking event filled with glitz & glamour. Representatives from Lia Sophia, Scentsy, & It Works will wrap you in jewellery, scent and an ultimate detoxifying makeover. Snacks & sandwiches prepared by Bistro 140 will be served. This will be an event you do not want to miss!!!
On a personal level, for April; it all comes down to focus and making positive changes in her life. She is well on her way to improved focus and success through joining the pound, and networking organizations; and continuing to set worthwhile predetermined goals with time committed every week to work on those goals. She continues to work toward a better structure that will allow her to achieve more focus and more success.
It is an absolute pleasure to recognize April for her professional passion and commitment to her clients and her community. We appreciate her membership and support of our network and look forward to this months networking event at her location. We wish April many years of continued success and prosperity making a difference in her client’s financial futures and providing the utmost in service for them.

Creating Strong Bonds
Lisa Astle
Creating Strong Bonds
Lisa Astle
Lisa Astle is the Owner and Operator of Kountry Kids Early Learning and Care as well as Kountry Kids After School Club located in Sunny Corner.
Lisa began her business seven years ago after receiving her Early Childhood Education in 1994. She always wanted to open her own child care center and was especially motivated after working with a lady in St. Andrews when she first graduated. This particular individual was her mentor and truly encouraged her and inspired Lisa with a love for providing early learning and care.
Lisa strives to develop strong bonds and relationships with the children she cares for. She does this by providing loving, caring experiences for them and an atmosphere that encourages and enables the children to learn through play in a positive environment.
The activities at Kountry Kids are fully experiential, including theme days such as Hippy Day, Cowboy /girl Day, Super Hero Day and Relay Races – complete with handmade medals for the kids. The kids have participated in activities outside of the daycare as well such as a trip to Ritchie Wharf, visiting the Seniors Home and Christmas Carolling to neighbors. Lisa is constantly engaging their minds through crafts and activities and has even had indoor snow play days. It’s no wonder she forms such strong bonds with the kids and they that the kids enjoy their time with her. Lisa would love to see her business grow and prosper over the next five years. She would like to add at least one full time employee and to expand the center with additional children registered.
Outside of her business, Lisa is involved in her community through volunteer work with Minor Hockey, the North and South Esk Elementary School and North and South Esk Regional High School Home and School Associations and as a member of the Parent School Support Committee for both schools. Lisa has also been teaching Sunday School at her church since 2003. Lisa is a wife of nineteen years and the mother of two wonderful boys aged six and twelve.
We are delighted to recognize Lisa for her accomplishments as an entrepreneur and congratulate her on her business success. WOMEN wishes Lisa many years of continued prosperity and we look forward to seeing her business grow and thrive, as she encourages and inspires our communities next generation.

Doing What I Love
Kim Harris
Doing What I Love
Kim Harris
Kim Harris is no stranger to the people of Miramichi. Whether someone is newly engaged, planning a wedding, or welcoming home a new baby, photographer Kim Harris is likely in their contact list.
One look through her website, kimharrisphoto.ca and it is easy to tell that Kim has a passion for photography. Her crisp images, her amazing backgrounds and eye for detail is what helps her excel at her passion.
“My passion is people. Every shot captures a smile, a moment, a memory,” says Kim when asked about her photography. She describes her photography as playful and imaginative. “I truly want your photography session to represent who you are. I want it to be real.”
Kim has been the owner of Eye Imagine Photography for nine years and just recently started her new business, Harris Custom Framing. Living in Miramichi, Kim is married to husband Kiley who she credits with being the most ‘supportive’ husband in the world and a mother to her two boys, Landon and Grayson.
She also graciously gives her time to organizations such as The Tiny Light Foundation, Miramichi Photographers for Haiti, Convoy for the Cure and WOMEN; as well as other fundraisers throughout the Miramichi area.
“I’ve had some amazing moments in my photography career. I have met some amazing people and have been part of some beautiful charity events.” Asked to name a most memorable moment, she says it is impossible as so many moments have made her job a rewarding one.
“Holding the hand of newborn just days old, celebrating with a cancer survivor after their last chemo treatment or meeting a couple married for 50+ years are all rewarding moments.”
Her future business plans include expanding to a new studio and continuing to promote her new frame line as well as teach others the art of photography.
Kim says photography is her life. She says it makes her a better person. And the hardest part of her job….making people smile. “I am doing what I love and it cannot get any better than that!”

Sense of Accomplishment
Cara Scott
Sense of Accomplishment
Cara Scott
Cara Scott describes her decision to become an entrepreneur as one “of the most craziest, most irresponsible things” she has done; but adds to that statement by saying that it turned out to be “the best move” she could make.
Cara is the owner of Leader of the Pack Dog Training School. She is also a Senior Consultant at the Process Management Centre for Service Canada.
The art of self-employment was something Cara knew all about after growing up in what she calls as a ‘self-employed household.’ She bought her first pair of puppies and after training them, she knew she wanted to create a business. Studying in Victoria, BC, she became a professional dog trainer and embarked on her journey of helping families build a relationship with their four-legged friends.
“I get a real sense of accomplishment when I see a family’s relationship with their dog change once they learn how to bring the best of out of their dog.”
Cara teaches evening classes and her business goal is to increase the number of classes, therefore increasing the number of puppies trained. She would also like to add some other classes to her curriculum.
When not training puppies, Cara works for Service Canada helping groups become more efficient by redesign their business processes. Having been with Service Canada for 15 years, Cara has spent the past three years working at the Process Management Centre. She said she gravitated toward the Centre wanting to work with like-minded people who are interested in improvement processes. Her job as senior consultant encourages creativity and allows her to make differences in the lives of her clients.
When not at Service Canada or training puppies, Cara is at home with her partner Shane, son Gregor and their pets. “My wonderful 10-year-old son keeps me busy with hockey in the winter and soccer in the summer.” She is also a community volunteer with many organizations. She has been a team captain for ‘Run for the Cure’ in previous years and very active in promoting support for new mothers with Post Partum Depression.
