Realizing Suite Success
Sara MacInnis, Owner of The King George Bed & Breakfast provides accommodation, custom cooking classes & hospitality. Her fabulous, quaint and cozy location which has grown in popularity, is now becoming an 'event destination' for small weddings, anniversary parties, workplace ‘get togethers’, and special events.
Sara’s journey to entrepreneurship travelled a winding road that began as an only girl in a household of brothers. She joined the armed forces after high school, spending two years that taught her a lot about herself and her ability to survive on her own. She learned that the restricted environment of the armed forces was definitely not career material for her. That experience also gave her the incentive to continue her education and travel the world.
Sara worked for private corporations in administrative and support positions; but always longed for a venue that would incorporate her creative side with her love of entertaining and cooking. She began putting plans in place to open a Bed and Breakfast which led her from Mississauga, Ontario to the Miramichi. She acquired a beautiful historic building on the corner of King George Highway and Regent Street, known locally as the ‘Stothart house’. Now recognized as one of Canada’s Historical Places, the Stothart House was built in 1918 by Gillmour Stothart, a local timber merchant, whose relatives still reside in and around Miramichi today.
Sara took great care to enhance all that could be preserved. Original floors, fireplace mantels and mouldings remain. Antiques and other furnishings are blended to create a wonderful year round living environment. In fact, every surface in the house, inside and out, has been restored or replaced with attention to detail and respect to its original design.
Sara and the staff at The King George Bed and Breakfast are committed to total guest satisfaction and enjoyment. Their gorgeous location offers old world charm while providing modern amenities. The surroundings are soft, warm and inviting - providing an atmosphere that encourages the relaxation and enjoyment typical of the Miramichi.
Sara is actively involved in the community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, WOMEN (Women of Miramichi Entrepreneurial Network), the Garden Club, and volunteers at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. She advertises regularly in the Mighty Miramichi Community Group publication – Bread 'n' Molasses and attempts to support as many local farmers, growers, fishermen, etc. by purchasing as much produce as she can locally. In fact, one of their major customer experiences this summer was the 'Mystery Food Adventure' package which consisted of 2 nights of accommodation and 1 evening meal with guests going direct to local suppliers to forage for the ingredients for their evening meal. A GPS, map and thermal bag were provided and then participants were sent on their merry way to discover and explore our community. The overall enjoyment was in meeting the locals and then preparing the food in our kitchen. The experience was a terrific success for everyone!
As a 'transplant' to Miramichi from Mississauga, without any family history in this area, Sara loves to tell the story about her initial introduction to the community. She was standing in a line at the grocery store when a gentleman behind her struck up a conversation. Having always been a 'big city' girl, Sara was somewhat shocked as to why this stranger would speak to her, and then thought perhaps he mistook her for someone he knew. So when a break in the conversation arose, she said to him, "I don't believe we've met, since I'm not from Miramichi." To which he promptly replied; "Oh, I know you're not from here - I just wanted to have a say with you". That made something click within her and she realized this was the type of community in which she wanted to live. A number of friends and family in Ontario cautioned her about being lonely and not having anyone to talk to once she moved to Miramichi. Sara proudly admits that so far, that just has not happened! She loves being known locally as 'that B&B lady’ in town and enjoys the daily encounters with each and every Miramichier.
We are pleased that this self proclaimed ‘big city girl’ found a home and opportunity in Miramichi; an opportunity that allows her to not only incorporate her creative side with her love of entertaining and cooking but also a place that enables her to ‘treat you like royalty.’

As the Labour Force Development Officer for Miramichi, I have been out getting to know our business community. This has enabled me to gather wonderful information that is valuable on many levels. To begin, your stories will help us here at Enterprise Miramichi and our partners better understand the skills we as a community possess, the skills we need to develop or recruit and help us recognize and build upon our strengths. There is also an opportunity to help our community on a larger scale. As mentioned in a previous article, I will be contributing ”Getting to Know Your Business Community” articles here in the Business Economic Outlook section of the newspaper. I am very pleased to present this first article in a series that will contribute to community growth and encourage entrepreneurship.
